2025 Annual Report: Rooted & Responsive

A Faithful Way of Life

L’Arche is not a fleeting response to the moment.
It is a faithful way of life, practiced day by day, that responds to changing needs through relationship.

For more than forty years, L’Arche Greater Washington, D.C. has shared life between people with and without intellectual disabilities, learning again and again that belonging is not something you declare once and for all. It is something you live into, adapt for, and recommit to as circumstances change and people grow older, wiser, and more vulnerable.

In a world that often demands immediate answers and fast solutions, L’Arche continues to move at the pace of relationship. We listen. We discern. We respond—not with reaction or fear, but with faithfulness shaped by decades of shared life.

Your support makes this way of life possible. It allows L’Arche to remain steady amid change, to respond thoughtfully to emerging needs, and to ensure that people with intellectual disabilities are not just cared for, but known, valued, and accompanied across a lifetime.

The stories in this report reflect that faithfulness in action. They show what it looks like when:

  • care is relational,
  • advocacy is grounded in encounter,
  • and transformation is mutual.

Thank you for being part of this life, and for journeying with us as it continues to unfold.

In a world that often demands immediate answers and fast solutions, L’Arche continues to move at the pace of relationship.

A Word of Welcome from Leadership

Dear Friends,

It is an honor to serve as the new Board President of L’Arche Greater Washington, D.C. My connection to this community spans many years—as a friend, donor, and board member—and I step into this role with deep gratitude.

I want to thank Carolyn Rumer for her years of dedicated leadership. Her wisdom and commitment have helped shape L’Arche GWDC into the strong community it is today. We are grateful that her presence and care for L’Arche continue beyond her presidency.

As you’ll read in this report, we remain a community and service provider that responds thoughtfully to changing needs. We listen and adapt—ensuring that people with intellectual disabilities are known and supported in the way they want to be.

Thank you for making this possible. Your support sustains a way of life rooted in dignity, stability, and belonging.

With gratitude,
Philip Ward | Board President

Your Impact in 2025

Lifelong Care & Relationships

Lifelong care means more than meeting immediate needs. It means knowing someone well enough—and long enough—to recognize when something is not right.

When you share daily life with someone, you come to know their baseline—their humor, their rhythms, their energy, their pain tolerance, their patterns. That kind of knowledge matters, especially in medical spaces where people with intellectual disabilities are too often misunderstood or dismissed.

This year, L’Arche accompanied a core member through appointments with multiple doctors as they sought answers to persistent health concerns. Because assistants and house leaders knew the person so well, they recognized that something wasn’t right, even as medical professionals insisted otherwise. They asked careful questions. They shared observations. They stayed present. That kind of consistent, relational advocacy helps counter the medical bias people with intellectual disabilities often face.

This work reflects the culture we intentionally create at L’Arche—one that expects assistants to speak up, equips them to navigate complex systems, and affirms the voices of core members in every setting. People are empowered not only to receive care, but to participate in decisions about their own lives.

The same commitment shaped other moments this year. When advised that hospice care at home was “not what group homes usually do,” L’Arche invested in nursing support so that Michael, our founding core member, could die at home as he wished. When another core member’s needs changed rapidly, the community created a 1:1 staffing model and a new apartment within a week so they could continue to call L’Arche home. During multiple complex hospitalizations, L’Arche provided round-the-clock presence (something that is not reimbursed by Medicaid) to ensure that pain was addressed and follow-up care provided—preventing unnecessary suffering.

This is what faithful response looks like. Because we know people deeply, we are able to advocate skillfully—ensuring that care is not only available, but dignified, personalized, and responsive across a lifetime.

Education & Advocacy

This year, L’Arche’s voice reached far beyond our homes.

The launch of On Loneliness became a catalyst for conversation. The film has now been viewed more than 586,000 times, screened widely, and was a 2026 Webby Nominee, which honors excellence on the internet. We even influenced the theme for World Down Syndrome Day and got to present the film at the United Nations headquarters in New York! The response has been moving—students approaching us in tears, sharing how seen they felt, and new invitations to speak alongside leading voices in the field of loneliness and belonging.

Through this process, we recognized something essential: L’Arche has wisdom to offer. Our daily life—friendship across difference, shared vulnerability, enduring commitment—speaks directly to some of the deepest challenges facing our society.

That outward engagement continued in many forms. Core members shared their experiences in classrooms and churches. Eileen and Ty participated in advocacy efforts on Capitol Hill with other L’Arche community members from across the USA. Our Community Connections Program hosted gatherings that brought together neighbors with and without disabilities, making visible the friendships our culture often overlooks. Even our annual talent show challenged assumptions about creativity, leadership, and ability.

We also educated our community about cuts to Medicaid and the real impact such decisions have on people with intellectual disabilities and their caregivers. When L’Arche speaks into policy conversations, we do so from lived experience.

Mission of Transformation

We often tell stories about how L’Arche transforms lives—like when Joseph, after taking his first flight, told Crisely, “I’m not scared anymore.” Or when Michael, our founding core member, died at home as he wished, surrounded by assistants and friends from across the country who held his hands and read from his favorite books.

But this year, we experienced with even greater clarity how deeply we, too, as a community and service provider, are being shaped in return.

As core members’ needs and desires shifted, so did we. When Bruce retired, daily schedules and expectations were reworked so that his days reflected a new season of rest and choice. As other core members aged or experienced changes in health and capacity, we adapted—creating new rhythms to honor dignity.

In response to the leadership and long-term commitment already demonstrated by assistants, we created new Lead Assistant roles—formalizing responsibilities that had grown organically within the community and recognizing that stewardship was already being lived out.

All this requires listening deeply and holding our systems loosely enough to evolve. Faithfulness does not mean standing still. It means remaining rooted while allowing ourselves to grow.

When a community allows itself to be shaped by the people it serves and the people who serve within it, it becomes all the more ready to hold that space of transformation for others.

Cordelia Smith joined L’Arche as an Awake Overnight Assistant in 2020. Six years later, she continues supporting core members overnight and as a Lead Assistant, taking on additional responsibilities and leadership in L’Arche.

“I’m very committed. I love what I do, or else I wouldn’t be here.” – Cordelia Smith, Ontario Lead Assistant

We’re beyond grateful for Cordelia and all of our Lead Assistants, Assistants, and House Leaders whose faithfulness has transformed our community.

By the Numbers: Stewardship & Accountability

L’Arche’s financial model reflects both public support and private generosity.

A significant portion of our funding comes through government programs that support essential services for people with intellectual disabilities. At the same time, these resources do not fully cover the true cost of providing the kind of care and community life that L’Arche is committed to.

Donor support makes that difference. It allows us to invest in meaningful wages for assistants, adapt homes to meet changing needs, and sustain a way of life rooted in dignity, stability, and relationship.

We offer this financial overview as part of our commitment to transparency and shared stewardship. Simply put, this work would not be possible without your support. Additional financial information is available upon request. Tax returns are publicly available online.

Looking Ahead

The needs of our community continue to evolve.

Core members are moving into new seasons of life. The systems that support people with intellectual disabilities remain uncertain. And the work of building communities of belonging–where people are known, supported, and valued–remains as necessary as ever.

In the year ahead, we’re looking forward to expanding that belonging, including the opening of our new home, The Farmhouse, in Arlington, VA.

In the meantime, L’Arche will continue to respond through relationship: listening closely, adapting thoughtfully, and remaining committed to the people who call this community home.

We are grateful to be walking this path together with you.

If you would like to stay connected, we invite you to:
