Diving Deeper 2022 – Healthcare, Employment, & Spirituality

Diving Deeper: A Discussion Series with L'Arche GWDC

Thank you to everyone who joined us during our Diving Deeper series this year! We enjoyed rousing and reflective discussions about human-centered healthcare, employment and disability, and the spirituality of L’Arche.

Did you miss any of our events? Listen to the recordings here!

Recap:

We learned a lot at the “Human-centered health” event. Meghan Chin, medical student, spoke about needing the representation of people with disabilities in medical training. Charles Clark, core family member, reminded us about the urgent need for accessible medical offices. Dr. Constance Battle talked about speaking directly to people with disabilities, ensuring their voices guide their medical care experience.

We also had a great discussion at our Making a Living with a Disability event, where we heard from the team at Jake’s Ice Cream, a shop run by people with and without disabilities. Team member Tim shared: “Some people might doubt what people with disabilities can do…definitely some ableism…and probably also like they might have not met people with disabilities so they might not know what we’re capable of.”

At our Spirituality of L’Arche event we spoke with Stacy Cates-Carney, the Vice International Leader of the Federation of L’Arche, and Edna Tang, a former assistant and home life leader in L’Arche GWDC’s Sixth Street House, and heard about their personal experiences of spirituality of L’Arche and they ways they grew in the L’Arche community.
