For members of Washington, D.C.’s L’Arche community, sharing a meal is at the heart of life together.

Dinner began as a quiet affair, everyone businesslike as plates were passed and glasses filled. The Ontario House family members—Eileen, Debora, Kara, Walton, Stephen, Michael, and Johnny—quickly welcomed me to their table. Soon the cutlery clanked. Partway through the meal, someone noticed an extra plate of pork chops and sides on the table, as though another guest might pull up a chair at any moment. The spirit of hospitality and welcome among the family members is as automatic as passing the butter.
