L’Arche Greater Washington, D.C., is excited to announce we have received permission from the District of Columbia’s Department on Disability Services to move a portion of our D.C. community onto the traditional and neighborhood campuses of Georgetown University. This is the first of a two phase expansion of our community and partnership with Georgetown University. It is envisioned “Phase 1” will open in 2019.
“Phase 1” is an on-campus location. The on-campus and neighborhood campus buildings have been identified by Georgetown University as candidates for conversion into L’Arche houses. Three core family members and three to four assistants will share life within a converted dormitory space. It is also possible that three to four students or visiting faculty members could also share in our daily life by residing on the 4th floor of the converted space. L’Arche will become neighbors to other students that live in larger dorm complexes, will share in the very active campus life, and enjoy the wider Georgetown environs!
“Phase 2” entails moving into converted Georgetown-owned town homes contiguous to the main campus. When the time comes for “Phase 2,” we will have learned many community-building lessons from “Phase 1,” and L’Arche GWDC in Georgetown will be fully established!
Lots of hard work, prayers, and generosity brought us to this point. Soon, Georgetown and L’Arche Greater Washington, D.C., will begin collaborating to secure funds for the renovations needed to create the accessible, comfortable, welcoming, and hospitable L’Arche homes!
Continued updates will be shared here on our website and you can also stay involved by attending our monthly Georgetown Prayer Nights on the 2nd Monday of each month. See our events calendar for more information.
