Board of Directors
Bob Asselin serves as the treasurer of the board. Bob first came to L’Arche as a volunteer through the Ignatian Volunteer Corps in 2004-2005. Following his retirement from a career as a USAID Foreign Service Officer and international development and nonprofit organization consultant, Bob returned to Washington, D.C. to retire in 2012 and quickly reconnected with L’Arche. He works as a part-time assistant at Ontario House, supports the community’s outreach and fundraising efforts, and joined the board in January 2015.
Françoise Aubry-Kendall serves as secretary of the board, which she has been a member of since April 1989. She was involved in L’Arche in her native Haiti prior to coming to L’Arche Greater Washington, D.C. Françoise is a resource management officer at The World Bank Group.
Kevin B. Belford, Esq., joined the L’Arche board in January 2010 and brings his nonprofit legal expertise to the finance committee. He is a Senior Vice President and General Counsel at the American Gas Association.
David Donohoe, Esq., joined the board in January 2015 after retiring from a 40-plus career as an attorney at Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP. His legal career was focused on antitrust and securities litigation. While at Akin Gump, David hired a young lawyer by the name of John Cook. John later left the firm to become the executive director of L’Arche GWDC. David was re-introduced to L’Arche by a granddaughter who volunteered at the farm in L’Arche Takoma (Washington) and served as an assistant in L’Arche Portland.
Fr. Thomas P. Gaunt, SJ, serves as president of the board, which he has been a member of since January 2005. Fr. Gaunt was first involved with people who have disabilities 40 years ago at the “Shriver Camp” and then at Misericordia Homes in Chicago. He served as a pastor in North Carolina for more than 10 years and is now the executive director of the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate (CARA) at Georgetown University.
Christine Madigan became a board member in January 2012 and serves as board vice president. She has twenty-plus years of experience in real estate and long-range planning. Christine is a senior vice president of development at Enterprise Homes, Inc.
Carolyn Rumer joined the L’Arche board in January 2017. Carolyn is an attorney and former L’Arche GWDC Assistant. Carolyn attended law school at the University of Virginia. Before law school, Carolyn completed a B.S. in Anthropology and Honors History at the University of Notre Dame.
Malcolm Young, PhD, joined the board in January 2000 and the L’Arche USA board in 2008. He brings his management consultant skills to the governance committee.
Constance Battle, MD, has been a board member since January 2008 and served for three years as the board vice president. She is an adjunct professor in the department of prevention and community health at the George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services.
